The key difference between a URL shortener and link cloaking is that shortening simply makes a long link shorter, while cloaking disguises the destination URL entirely and keeps your affiliate ID hidden from visitors.
You’ve seen both terms thrown around in affiliate marketing circles, and they’re often used interchangeably. But they serve different purposes, come with different benefits and risks, and understanding the distinction can save you from losing commissions or even violating affiliate terms.
In this guide, you’ll learn exactly what each technique does, how they differ, when to use each one, and which one is right for your affiliate marketing strategy.
TL;DR
URL shorteners condense long affiliate links into shorter versions (like bit.ly/xyz123 or yourbrand.link/offer) for easier sharing and tracking. Link cloaking goes further—it creates a branded URL on your own domain that hides the original affiliate destination entirely, protecting your affiliate ID from theft and making links appear more trustworthy. Shortening is generally safe for all programs, while cloaking may violate some affiliate TOS (like Amazon’s when masking the destination). Use the right tool for your specific needs.
Key Takeaways
- URL shorteners focus on reducing link length and providing click analytics—they don’t necessarily hide the destination or protect affiliate IDs .
- Link cloaking masks the original affiliate URL behind a branded link on your own domain, protecting commissions and building trust .
- Both methods can shorten links, but cloaking prioritises security and branding while shortening prioritises length and tracking .
- Amazon specifically prohibits masking the destination URL, so only link shortening (not full cloaking) is allowed for Amazon Associates .
- Most WordPress plugins like Pretty Links, ThirstyAffiliates, and Royal Links combine both shortening and cloaking features .
What Is a URL Shortener?
A URL shortener is a tool that takes a long, cumbersome URL and condenses it into a shorter, more manageable version . The shortened URL redirects to the original destination when clicked, but the user typically sees the original URL once they land on the page .
How Shortening Works
When you enter a long URL into a shortening service:
- The service creates a unique short code (like abc123)
- It stores the mapping between the short code and the original URL
- It gives you a short URL like bit.ly/abc123
- When someone clicks the short link, the service looks up the mapping and redirects them to the original URL
Benefits of URL Shorteners
- Cleaner, more shareable links — ideal for social media with character limits
- Click tracking — see how many people clicked, where they came from, and what device they used
- Custom branding — many services let you use your own domain (like links.yourbrand.com/offer)
- Updatable destinations — change the target URL without changing the short link
Popular URL shorteners include Bitly, TinyURL, Rebrandly, and many WordPress plugins like ShortLinks Pro and LinkFiliate .
What Is Link Cloaking?
Link cloaking is a technique that not only shortens a URL but also disguises or masks the original destination URL entirely . When a visitor clicks a cloaked link, they see your branded URL in the browser’s address bar throughout the redirect, and the original affiliate ID remains hidden .
For example, a raw affiliate URL like :
https://affiliate-program.com/product?affid=12345&tracking=summer-campaign
…is cloaked to a clean, branded URL like :
https://yoursite.com/recommends/product
How Cloaking Works
Link cloaking uses redirection techniques—typically 301 (permanent), 302 (temporary), or 307 redirects—to guide users from the branded URL to the final destination . The cloaking process happens seamlessly in the background, and the user never sees the messy affiliate URL .
Benefits of Link Cloaking
- Protects affiliate commissions — hides your affiliate ID from being copied, stripped, or hijacked
- Builds trust and brand recognition — users see a professional, branded URL instead of a suspicious-looking link
- Increases click-through rates — branded links are perceived as safer and more trustworthy
- Advanced tracking and analytics — detailed insights into clicks, devices, referrers, and performance
- Protects against ad blockers — some blockers target raw affiliate URLs, which cloaking bypasses
According to ThirstyAffiliates, cloaked links can lead to higher click-through rates because they appear as friendly recommendations rather than suspicious affiliate links .
URL Shortening vs Link Cloaking: The Key Differences
While these terms are often used interchangeably, they serve distinct purposes in affiliate marketing .
| Feature | URL Shortener | Link Cloaking |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Reduce link length | Hide destination URL and protect affiliate ID |
| Destination visibility | User may see the original URL | Original URL stays completely hidden |
| Affiliate ID protection | Not guaranteed (may still be visible) | Fully hidden and protected |
| Branded links | Can be branded (yourdomain.link) | Always branded (yourdomain.com/go/product) |
| Tracking analytics | Basic click data | Advanced tracking, conversion data, split testing |
| Complexity | Simple setup | Often requires plugin or advanced tool |
| Merchant acceptance | Widely accepted | Some merchants prohibit full masking |
As one source explains:
Link shortening focuses on reducing the length of URLs for easier tracking, whereas link cloaking prioritizes protection and branding. Both methods suggest unique advantages, and understanding the appropriate contexts for their application can empower affiliate marketers to utilize them more efficiently .
When to Use Each Method
Use a URL Shortener When:
- You need a quick, simple link for social media or email
- You’re using a program that allows only shortening (like Amazon Associates, where masking the destination is prohibited)
- You don’t need advanced protection for your affiliate ID
- You want basic click data without advanced management features
Use Link Cloaking When:
- You want to protect your affiliate commissions from theft or hijacking
- You need a branded, trustworthy link that builds recognition
- You want advanced tracking — device, location, conversion data, and split testing
- You manage many affiliate links and need to organise and update them efficiently
- Your affiliate program allows cloaking (always check the terms!)
Important: Check Your Affiliate Terms
Not all affiliate programs allow cloaking. For example, Amazon Associates permits link shortening (the “pretty link” type of cloaking) but prohibits “target URL masking” where the destination is completely hidden .
Amazon’s rule, as explained in the Pretty Links support forum:
…the first type of cloaking (link shortening) is acceptable to use for your Amazon affiliate links as long as you’re compliant with their participation requirements. The main thing to ensure here is that it’s obvious to your users that they’re going to Amazon, so whenever you’re placing your pretty links on your site you’ll want to make sure the word “Amazon” is somewhere close to the text where the link is inserted .
Always review your affiliate program’s terms of service before implementing cloaking.
Tools for Both Methods
Many WordPress plugins combine both shortening and cloaking features, offering the best of both worlds .
| Plugin/Tool | Key Features | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Pretty Links | Link shortening, cloaking, tracking, redirects, automation | Affiliate marketers needing comprehensive link management |
| ThirstyAffiliates | Link cloaking, management, visual editor integration, branding | WordPress users wanting easy affiliate link insertion |
| Royal Links | Cloaking, tracking, geo-targeting, A/B testing, QR codes | Advanced users needing split testing and automation |
| LinkFiliate | Branded short links, click tracking, UTM builder, QR codes | Brand-conscious marketers wanting complete link control |
| Affiliate Links (wecantrack) | Cloaking, server-side tracking, ad network integrations | Users integrating with ad platforms like Google Ads |
Frequently Asked Questions
Is link cloaking the same as link shortening?
No. Shortening simply reduces link length; cloaking hides the destination URL and protects affiliate IDs. While some tools do both, they serve different primary purposes .
Can I cloak Amazon affiliate links?
Yes, but with restrictions. You can shorten them (the “pretty link” type), but you cannot fully mask the destination or hide that the link leads to Amazon. Always make it clear to users they’re going to Amazon .
Does link cloaking improve click-through rates?
Yes. Cloaked links appear more trustworthy and professional than raw affiliate URLs, which can increase click-through rates and conversions .
Will link cloaking hurt my SEO?
Properly implemented cloaking using 301 redirects and nofollow or sponsored attributes won’t harm your SEO. However, deceptive cloaking (showing different content to search engines than to users) is a black-hat technique that violates Google guidelines .
What’s the easiest way to start cloaking affiliate links?
Install a WordPress plugin like Pretty Links, ThirstyAffiliates, or Lasso Lite. These plugins handle the technical redirection and tracking for you .
