You paste a carefully crafted link into your LinkedIn post, hit publish, and LinkedIn turns it into a generic mess like lnkd.in/3y252u3423—wiping out your brand and any chance of tracking who clicked.
Sharing links on LinkedIn is one of the most important things you do for your professional brand. Your links are the final call-to-action in posts, direct messages, and your profile bio. It’s your one chance to drive traffic, track engagement, and reinforce trust .
Yet most people get link sharing on LinkedIn wrong. They either paste long, ugly URLs that look unprofessional, or they rely on LinkedIn’s built-in shortener that strips away all brand value. In this guide, you’ll learn exactly how to shorten links for LinkedIn correctly—covering both your profile URL and the links you share in posts—so your links build trust and actually drive results.
TL;DR
Shorten links for LinkedIn in two ways. For your profile URL, use LinkedIn’s free custom URL feature to get a clean linkedin.com/in/yourname. For links you post, articles, or your bio, use a branded URL shortener that uses your own domain—generic shorteners like bit.ly look suspicious, and LinkedIn’s own shortener replaces your link with lnkd.in. Branded short links can increase click-through rates by up to 39% because people trust recognizable links more than generic ones .
Key Takeaways
- LinkedIn automatically replaces any link longer than 26 characters with its own generic shortener (lnkd.in) .
- You can claim a custom profile URL for free in LinkedIn settings—
linkedin.com/in/yournameinstead of the default with random numbers . - For links you post, use a branded shortener with your own domain—generic shorteners look suspicious on a professional platform .
- Branded links can increase click-through rates by up to 39% compared to generic shortened links .
- LinkedIn’s built-in shortening provides no click tracking—you need a third-party tool to see who clicked and where they came from .
- Remove auto-generated link previews before posting to potentially improve reach—click the X on the preview image .
The LinkedIn Link Problem: What Happens When You Paste a Long URL
LinkedIn has a built-in URL shortener that automatically overwrites any link longer than 26 characters . So even if you’ve paid for a custom domain and carefully chosen a descriptive back-half for your link, LinkedIn will replace it with something generic like lnkd.in/3y252u3423 .
This happens without you noticing. Your carefully chosen yourbrand.co/exciting-offer becomes lnkd.in/3y252u3423 the moment your post goes live.
Why is this a problem?
- No brand visibility. Your audience sees “lnkd.in” instead of your brand name. They don’t know who shared the link .
- Reduced trust. People are wary of generic short links on LinkedIn, where reputation matters. A branded link signals the content is safe .
- Lost control over link text. Part of what makes custom domains powerful is the ability to write back-half tag text that communicates value to your audience. LinkedIn replaces it with random characters .
- No click tracking. LinkedIn’s lnkd.in links don’t give you click data. You can’t see who clicked or which post drove the traffic .
Important: LinkedIn’s default shortener is different from a properly set up branded shortener. LinkedIn removes your domain; a branded shortener keeps it visible.
Method 1: Shorten Your LinkedIn Profile URL (The Free Way)
Your LinkedIn profile comes with a default URL that includes random numbers: linkedin.com/in/jane-doe-1a2b3c4d5. This is messy, hard to remember, and doesn’t help your personal brand .
LinkedIn lets you change this for free in about 60 seconds. Here’s how :
- Log into LinkedIn on a desktop browser (this setting isn’t available on the mobile app) .
- Click the “Me” icon in the top-right and select “View profile.”
- Click “Edit public profile & URL” on the right side of your profile page .
- Under “Edit your custom URL,” click the pencil icon .
- Enter your preferred handle—use your name, business name, or a relevant keyword. Keep it between 3–100 characters and use only letters or numbers (no spaces or special characters) .
- Click Save.
Your profile is now linkedin.com/in/yourname—short, professional, and easy to include on business cards, email signatures, and social bios .
What if your ideal name is taken? Add a middle initial or a relevant word like “writes” or “creative”: linkedin.com/in/janedoewrites .
Method 2: Shorten Links You Post on LinkedIn (The Right Way)
This is where most people get it wrong. For the links you share in LinkedIn posts, articles, direct messages, and your bio, you need a branded URL shortener—not a generic one.
Why Generic Shorteners Don’t Work on LinkedIn
Generic shorteners like bit.ly or tinyurl have two problems on LinkedIn:
- They look suspicious. On a professional platform like LinkedIn, people are cautious about clicking unfamiliar shortened domains. A link like
bit.ly/xyz123doesn’t scream “trustworthy professional” . - LinkedIn may override them. Even if you use a generic shortener, LinkedIn’s system might still convert your link to
lnkd.inif it detects a long destination URL .
How Branded Short Links Work
A branded short link uses your own domain instead of a generic shortening domain . Instead of bit.ly/xyz123, you get go.yourbrand.com/linkedin-guide.
Here’s how to set them up:
- Register a custom domain or subdomain for your short links (e.g.,
go.yourbrand.comorlink.yourbrand.com). - Connect it to a branded link management platform like Rebrandly, Replug, UseClick, or similar .
- Paste your long LinkedIn post URL into the platform.
- Customize the back-half slug to describe the content (e.g.,
linkedin-guide). - Copy the branded short link and paste it into your LinkedIn post.
Branded links stay visible in your post—LinkedIn doesn’t replace them with lnkd.in because they’re already short. Your audience sees go.yourbrand.com/linkedin-guide and immediately knows who’s sharing the content .
Benefits of Branded Short Links on LinkedIn
- Up to 39% higher click-through rates compared to generic shorteners because people trust recognizable links .
- Brand consistency. Every link you share reinforces your brand identity .
- Complete click tracking. See total clicks, unique clicks, geographic data, device types, and referral sources—information LinkedIn doesn’t provide .
- Flexible destination management. Update the destination URL after posting without breaking the link. This is ideal for updating expired pages or pivoting a campaign in real time .
- Better campaign integration. Use click data to build custom audiences and integrate with tools like Google Ads or Meta for retargeting .
Adding UTM Parameters to Track LinkedIn Campaigns
If you’re using Google Analytics, add UTM parameters to your destination URL before shortening. This tells you exactly which LinkedIn posts drive traffic to your site .
A UTM-tagged LinkedIn URL looks like this:
Then shorten the full UTM-tagged URL using your branded shortener. The tracking parameters are preserved through the redirect, so you see the data in Google Analytics as usual .
Create a separate trackable link for each LinkedIn post, article, or campaign so you can compare performance accurately.
LinkedIn Link Shortener Comparison Table
| Method | Best For | Benefits | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| LinkedIn Custom Profile URL | Personal profile links | Free, clean linkedin.com/in/name | Only for your main profile |
| LinkedIn Default Shortener (lnkd.in) | Nothing recommended | Automatic | No tracking, removes brand, generic look |
| Generic URL Shortener (Bitly, TinyURL) | Casual sharing outside LinkedIn | Quick and free | Looks suspicious, limited tracking |
| Branded Shortener (Rebrandly, Replug, UseClick) | Professional links, marketing campaigns | Brand visible, up to +39% CTR, complete tracking, editable destinations | Requires custom domain, may have subscription cost |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Relying on LinkedIn’s default shortener. It removes your brand and provides zero click tracking .
- Using generic shorteners on LinkedIn. They look unprofessional and may still get overridden by LinkedIn .
- Shortening a LinkedIn profile URL with a third-party tool. Just use LinkedIn’s free custom URL feature instead .
- Not adding UTM parameters before shortening. You lose campaign data in Google Analytics .
- Keeping auto-generated link previews in your posts. Some experts suggest removing the preview image by clicking the X when it appears—this may improve reach .
- Sharing anonymous short links that expire. Some tools delete unclaimed links after 30 days. Sign up to keep them permanent .
- Using the same short link for multiple posts. You can’t tell which specific post drove traffic.
LinkedIn QR Codes: An Alternative to Short Links
LinkedIn gives every member a unique QR code in the mobile app. Access it from the QR symbol in the search bar, save it to your gallery, or use it to scan another member’s code to open their profile .
LinkedIn QR codes work well at conferences, networking events, and meetings. Place them on business cards, signage, badges, or presentation slides .
For more control over tracking, you can also create QR codes that point to your branded short links. When someone scans the code, they reach your destination through the shortener, and you can track how many scans came from printed materials .
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use short links in LinkedIn Ads?
Yes. Short links redirect through the same standard HTTP mechanism LinkedIn Ads expects. You can use short links in ad copy, sponsored content, and InMail to keep messages clean and professional .
Will LinkedIn penalize my post for using a short link?
No. LinkedIn does not penalize content with short links. Cleaner posts often perform better because they’re easier for your audience to read .
Does LinkedIn have a built-in URL shortener for posts?
Not really. LinkedIn automatically shortens long URLs to lnkd.in, but this removes your brand and offers no click tracking. For professional use, a branded shortener is the better choice .
Can I track clicks on LinkedIn links I share?
Yes, but only with a third-party shortener. LinkedIn’s lnkd.in links provide no click data. A branded short link gives you total and unique clicks, geographic data, and device information .
Is it free to shorten LinkedIn links?
Claiming a custom profile URL is free inside LinkedIn. Shortening the links you post is also free with most URL shorteners, but branded link features and detailed analytics typically require a paid plan .
How do I shorten a LinkedIn company page or article URL?
Use the same process as for any post link. Paste the company page URL or article URL into your branded shortener, customize the slug, and share the short link .
