You post the same link across every social platform, but Facebook buries it, LinkedIn previews it wrong, and Instagram won’t even let you click it.
Social media link sharing has become more complex than ever. Platforms are actively suppressing external links to keep users on their sites , while each platform has its own quirks—link limits, character truncation, preview behavior, and whether links are clickable at all .
In this guide, you’ll learn the best practices for sharing links on every major social media platform. We’ll cover platform-specific rules, link optimization strategies, how to use link-in-bio tools effectively, and what to do about the declining organic reach of external links.
TL;DR
Share links on social media effectively by understanding each platform’s unique rules. Facebook and LinkedIn posts support links but algorithms suppress reach . Instagram only allows clickable links in Stories and bio. TikTok restricts links to business accounts with 1,000+ followers. Use branded short links instead of generic ones like bit.ly . For platforms with no clickable links, use a link-in-bio tool like Hootbio or Linktree . Always add UTM parameters to track performance, and pair external links with engaging native content to mitigate reach penalties .
Key Takeaways
- External links lose reach: Posts linking to external sites can see a 219% decline in reach compared to native posts .
- Branded short links build trust: Use custom domains (e.g., go.yourbrand.com/offer) instead of generic shorteners like bit.ly .
- Instagram only allows links in Stories and bio: Links in captions and comments are not clickable—direct users to your bio .
- TikTok requires a business account: You need a business account with 1,000+ followers for clickable links .
- LinkedIn and X have link preview limits: LinkedIn shortens vanity URLs to 26 characters; X truncates long URLs to 23 characters .
- Disclosure is non-negotiable: Affiliate links must be disclosed per FTC guidelines and platform policies .
Platform-Specific Best Practices
Each social platform has its own rules for links. Here’s what works for each:
Facebook allows links in posts, stories, and comments, but the algorithm favors native content like text, images, and videos . Link previews are auto-generated but can be edited before posting .
Best practices:
- Use engaging visuals to accompany your link—posts with images get more clicks.
- Write a compelling caption that explains why someone should click.
- Consider putting links in comments or pinned comments to reduce reach penalties .
- Monitor performance using Facebook’s Page Insights.
LinkedIn supports links in posts, articles, and comments. Link previews shrink in size if the post is not promoted . Custom profile URLs are limited to 26 characters .
Best practices:
- Use a branded short link to avoid LinkedIn’s generic lnkd.in replacement .
- Post content that builds a case, then let your link provide the resolution .
- Pin your best traffic-driving posts to the top of your profile .
- Use specific CTAs like “Read the full breakdown at [link]” instead of vague prompts .
Instagram is the most restrictive platform for links. Clickable links are only allowed in Stories and your bio section . Links in captions and comments are not clickable—users must manually copy and paste . Shoppable posts are available for businesses, but external eCommerce links are restricted .
Best practices:
- Use a link-in-bio tool (like Hootbio, Linktree, or Tap.bio) to create a landing page with multiple links .
- Add a clear call-to-action in your captions directing people to the link in your bio.
- Use emojis to draw attention to your bio link CTA .
- Keep your bio link page updated with your latest promotions or content .
TikTok

Best practices:
- Switch to a business account in Settings to unlock the link feature .
- Use your bio link to direct followers to your website or a link-in-bio page.
- Keep your bio link updated to match your latest content .
- If you don’t meet the follower requirements, link your Instagram or YouTube account to TikTok and host links there instead .
X (Twitter)
X does not allow generic URL shorteners like Bitly—only specific whitelisted domains work . Link previews are auto-generated and cannot be edited . The platform automatically shortens long URLs to 23 characters .
Best practices:
- Use a branded shortener or an approved link management platform.
- Pin posts with important links to the top of your profile .
- Add your website URL to your X profile as a permanent link source .
YouTube
YouTube supports links in video descriptions, channel pages, comments, and pinned comments . Long URLs are truncated after 40 characters . You can include up to 14 links on your channel page . Links cannot be added in YouTube Shorts or Shorts comments .
Best practices:
- Include links in your channel About section, including website, blog, and social profiles .
- Add links in video descriptions with clear CTAs related to the video content .
- Use end screens and cards to add clickable links within videos .
- Once you reach 1,000 subscribers, use Community posts to share links to new content and promotions .

Best practices:
- Add your affiliate link to the pin description with relevant context .
- Ensure links are relevant to the pin content .
- Enable rich pins for automatic link metadata .
Link Types: What to Use and What to Avoid
| Link Type | Best For | Why It Works | What to Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Branded Short Links | All platforms | Builds trust, +39% higher CTR, detailed analytics | Using generic shorteners like bit.ly on X and LinkedIn |
| Link-in-Bio Pages | Instagram, TikTok | Bypasses platform link restrictions | Overloading with too many links |
| UTM-Tagged Links | All platforms | Track performance in Google Analytics | Posting long UTM links without shortening |
| Pinned Links | Instagram, LinkedIn, X | Keeps link visible at top of profile | Not updating pinned links when content changes |
How to Handle Declining Organic Reach for External Links
Platforms are actively suppressing posts that send users away from their site. According to a study of 15,000 social media profiles, posts linking to external sites now see a 219% decline in reach compared to three years ago when the penalty was only 74% .
Here’s how to adapt:
- Reduce direct outbound links in organic posts. Move links to comments or pinned comments to preserve visibility .
- Use native formats (video, carousels). These maintain algorithmic favor while still allowing you to drive awareness .
- Use paid social for link distribution. Organic reach is no longer reliable for driving traffic .
- Repurpose social content for email capture. Build audiences on the platform, then move them into owned channels where you control traffic .
- Test platform-specific workarounds. Experiment with stories, pinned comments, and profile links to identify the least penalized placements .
As Neil Patel puts it, “Social platforms are clearly telling marketers they do not want to be traffic sources anymore. If links are critical to your funnel, you need to rethink how and where you distribute them.”
Link-in-Bio Best Practices
Link-in-bio tools are essential for Instagram, TikTok, and other platforms that restrict clickable links in posts. Here’s how to use them effectively:
Highlight Your Most Important Links
Resist the urge to include every link. Focus on your website home page, latest content, promotions, online store, and best-performing lead magnets .
Match Your Links to Your Goals
If you want to build your email list, put your lead magnet and signup front and center. If you’re driving sales, focus on your storefront and current sales .
Keep Your Link-in-Bio Up-to-Date
Regularly update your page with new links that pertain to recent posts. Some tools let you showcase recent posts automatically .
Use Emojis to Draw Attention
Use emojis in your captions to highlight your bio link CTA—a well-placed 👇 or 🔗 can increase clicks .
Recommended Tools
Popular link-in-bio tools include Hootbio (available to Hootsuite Advanced and Enterprise users), Linktree, and Tap.bio .
UTM Parameters: The Foundation of Link Tracking
UTM parameters are essential for tracking social media link performance. Here’s a quick refresher:
| Parameter | Purpose | Example |
|---|---|---|
utm_source | Platform name | facebook, instagram, linkedin |
utm_medium | Channel type | social (organic), paid-social |
utm_campaign | Campaign name | summer_sale |
utm_content | Creative variation | video_ad, image_banner |
Always shorten UTM-tagged URLs before posting. Use a branded shortener or a tool that preserves tracking parameters . Generic shorteners like bit.ly are not accepted on all platforms (especially X and LinkedIn) and can appear untrustworthy .
UTM parameters are not cookies—they’re part of the URL itself. As third-party cookies fade, UTM-based tracking becomes the most reliable way to measure campaign effectiveness .
Disclosure and Compliance
If you’re using affiliate links on social media, you must disclose your relationship with the brand. This is required by the FTC and by platform policies .
Best practices for disclosure:
- In posts: Include a clear notice like “Affiliate link” or “I earn a commission.”
- On YouTube: Mention verbally and include text in the description .
- On social media: Use hashtags like #affiliate, #ad, or #sponsored .
- Review and follow each advertiser’s social media policies in their Terms and Conditions .
